Travel+Leisure magazine recently named Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, one of the most beautiful coastal towns around the world. And it just so happens that SPARKS FLY retreats is hosting Allegra Huston’s memoir writing workshop at the historic Bluenose Lodge, in gorgeous Lunenburg, from May 22-27th.

Learn to tell your story in Lunenburg

As you venture into your memoir, you’ll do so against the backdrop of this one-of-a-kind coastal town. It’s so picture-perfect it’s often used as a film stand-in for traditional coastal New England. Located on the western side of Mahone Bay, on the Atlantic Coast, Lunenburg is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Founded in 1753, Old Town Lunenburg is the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Its colourful buildings climb a hillside that overlooks the Bay. Originally a fishing port, it is still home to scallop and lobster fishermen.

Lunenburg is also an architectural gem, with colourful, well-preserved examples of Cape Cod style, as well as Neo-Classical (Georgian), Scottish (with five-sided Scottish dormers), Gothic Revival, Second Empire, and Queen Anne Revival styles.

Why not Take a leisurely stroll through the street or along the stunning waterfront, where you may well see the Bluenose II, if she’s in port? The original Bluenose was a world-famous fishing and racing schooner, as well as winner of many races. She came to represent Nova Scotia’s prominence in the fishing and ship-building world. The schooner is such an important part of Canadian history, that it graces the front of the Canadian ten cent coin.

Lunenburg has a vibrant arts community, and is home to numerous art galleries. There are three great independent bookstores on one little street, and so many wonderful restaurants that it’s hard to pick a favourite. And, if you’re looking for lobster, look no further.
