Hello Writer,
Do you sometimes find yourself staring at a blank piece of paper, befuddled and confounded, unsure where to start, only to remember you have some delicates that urgently need hand washing, or that this very moment is the perfect time to google hotels in Lisbon for a trip you have dreamed of taking… some day?
Are you prone to staring vacantly out the window, or gazing blankly at the contents of your refrigerator, lit in a beam of unflattering light, considering how long past its ’best before’ date it’s safe to eat that vintage whipped cream? I certainly have. There are so many creative ways to avoid putting pen to paper. Sometimes all you need to get writing is a little kick-start in the form of a writing prompt.
What are writing prompts?
Writing prompts are useful tools, a nudge to help you get going. They are a word or phrase or image that introduces a topic and focuses your attention on that topic, encouraging you to write about it in a creative way. There is no judgement or expectation when using a writing prompt; it’s simply an avenue to inspiration, an exercise that allows you to follow your thoughts and see where your mind takes you.
Using a writing prompt is fun! Set yourself a ten-minute timer, and then write away. You’ll be surprised what flows out of your pen.

Allegra Huston and James Navé, at Imaginative Storm, provide a writing prompt of the week, every Saturday, on Zoom. These writing prompts are FREE, and are an excellent way to spark your imagination. Additionally, you can follow Imaginative Storm on Instagram to receive daily prompts. Again, these prompts are free. No strings, just encouragement. Plus, they are suitable for every level of writer, from beginner to professional.
Allegra Huston will be conducting her Imaginative Storm Memoir Writing Workshop in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia from May 23 – 27, 2023. This will be Allegra’s first in-person workshop since Covid came to town. Find more details about Allegra Huston’s spring 2023 writing workshop here.
